driving a 5 m 12v neopixel strip

Post by jpspoonhower »

I could use a little guidance on how to wire up a 5m 12v neopixel WS2811 strip. I plan to drive the LED strip with either a feather M4 or the Metro express M0 board. I have a stockpile of TIP120 transistors and a 6A 12v power supply. This newbie just needs a little help with connecting all these.
Thanks in advance.

We don't have any experience with those. It looks like you will need a 12V/6A power supply. And probably a level shifter to shift the 3.3v signals from the M4 up to 5v for the strip.

You'll need to ask your supplier for clear documentation on the pinout for the strip. Looks like maybe red for power and white for ground? But it is best to make sure since it would be an expensive mistake to reverse the polarity.

You all can ignore my original post. I decided to just have 2 separate power supplies. I seems to me to be easiest

Be sure to connect the grounds of the two supplies together, since the ground will serve as your voltage reference for the control signals.
