128x64 OLED very dim

Post by sp1d3r »

A couple weeks ago I purchased a 128x64 Featherwing OLED display (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4650). It was working fine for the first week, but yesterday appeared extremely dim/illegible (see attached). As I tried different display patterns, is also appears some of the pixels have significant burn-in in the shape of text that I had originally programmed on the display during the first week when all was working (see the dim extra pixels in the Adafruit logo below). As of today I can't see anything on the display.

I have tried reflowing the headers as well as testing with the demo sketch (https://learn.adafruit.com/pages/20209/ ... d?type=zip), but am getting the same behavior. Searching through the forum, I am thinking I may have an early life defect on my panel. Any other suggestions?

For the week it was in use, how long was it left constantly on?

It was left on for maybe ~30 min at a time, over 3 or 4 sessions. So cumulative on-time of a couple of hours I would estimate.

This looks very similar to the behavior seen here:

Let's wait a bit and see if that person responds. Since there are now multiple cases of this, we should rule out any potential software issue.

Thanks for the link -- that indeed looks like exactly the same issue I have seen. As that user mentioned, my display also got progressively dimmer over the first day after it initially stopped working correctly. Now I am unable to see anything at all on the display. Given we have both tried multiple sketches and have the same issue I'm assuming this is a problem with the hardware.

Let's go ahead and replace your hardware. Even if this is something software related, it may be a while before it can be fully determined.

Send an email to [email protected] with a link to this thread and your order number and they can send you a replacement OLED FeatherWing.

Just to follow up -- I received the replacement several days ago and have been using it without issue thus far.

Thanks for letting us know. If the same behavior shows up on the replacement, please let us know. We'd be interested in a case where two of them do the same thing.
