Try with the convenience option too. Using the bonnet that does not have the CPIO4-18 short.

Yep, no change whatsoever. Still the same blank rows. (Except the other bonnet from before which generates absolutely nothing)

This is a total mystery. It does not seem hardware related, since the issue shows up on all combinations of redundant hardware. All known software things have been tried as well, and still no change. We have also not seen this combination of issues in any other situation.

All we can do at this point is offer a refund. Please email [email protected] with a link to this thread and they can handle that.

Sounds good. Appreciate the help. I'll update this thread again if I'm able to find a solution.

Matrix Bonnet For Raspberry Pi - on a Pi 4 8Gb
I've had very similar issues to others posting here. not hardware, something in the background software, not related to the Bonnet code.
Getting out the oscilloscope (with the LED matrix disconnected) showed that there is a clocking waveform on the LATCH signal (pin GPIO 17, IIRC) at about 1.8kHz.
The mark:space is about 1:8 high:low, with a bit of flutter in the actual frequency.
Running the demo software overlays the desired latch data with the background - a real mess! Stopping the demo keeps the background clocking going.
Using a gpio setting tool does not stop the clocking.
This is present from boot-up on the Pi, and it is the same for SD card images with and without the LED matrix demo code installed.
I've updated both Pi images and it's still the same. Both SD cards descended from original NOOB software.
Tried turning off all peripherals, but no effect.
Basically, something is ticking in the OS and needs to be stopped...
There may be other waveforms on the other GPIO pins - not check yet.
Suggestions welcomed...

Resolved here.
Made the mistake of cloning an SD card from one running 'simh'. No wonder the GPIO lines waggle!
Morale: check for other stuff running by default from boot up!
