Forgive my complete ignorance on the subject, but can this screen produce/shuffle images from the SD Card with nothing more than 3-5v power and no processor or board connected?
If not, what is the smallest possible board recommend to keep the finished unit as compact as possible?
Again, I’m a complete newbie and know nothing on this subject. Thanks!

The TFT can not work stand alone. It requires a microcontroller board to drive the display, read the SD card, etc.
Checkout the QT Py's and the Itsy's for small board options.
If battery power is going to be used, then also consider Feather's, since they have built in LiPo charging.
