7 segment display

Post by Davis2x1 »

I have an 7 -segment display with 12c back pack. Is there a way to bench test the unit to see if its working without any code. At this time I am not sure if the Arduino board or the display is bad. The qwiip voltages from the board are +3.8v, SDA 1.5 v, SCL 2.0v. I know I need 5 volts for power per the instructions.

Thanks for any help

Dave

What is the Adafruit part# for your i2c 7-segment display?

https://www.adafruit.com/?q=I2c+7-segme ... =BestMatch

Which model of Arduino are you using?

How are you connecting it via QWIIC connector? Can you post a photo with the 7-seg and Arduino?

With the i2c parts it can be easier to make sure you are connected to the correct pins and running the correct example code rather than trying to diagnose the problem with a multimeter.

Mike??,

Just spent the last few hours trying to add a photo to post. will try again when I regain my composure.

The display is an Adafruit part no 1270 1.2" red 7 digit unit.

I started this project with an Arduino Uno. The system worked but I wanted to clean it up. Wired in an Redboard Edge. It worked for a few years then craped out. No Redboard Edge available. I went to The Redboard Plus with the solder connectors. Tried two different boards to no avail. No display, no ball reset button, no nothing.

Trying to figure out why.

The controller is used to keep score on a skeeball game I built. It consisted of the main board, a LCD 7 segment display and a reset button with LED . Each ball rolled scores via an IR sensor the scores are added from 10, 20,30,40,50,and 100 depending which hole the ball enters. After 9 balls are played the reset button lights up and the display is reset.

First photo shows initial fit up using Arduino Uno board. Worked fine.
Second photo shows Redboard Edge hard wired into panel. Worked fine then after a few years it failed. Could not communicate with board.
Third photo shown the new Redboard Plus as the Edge was no longer available. Can not get this one to work.

Dave,

This is a cool skeeball project.

Thank you for sharing the photos.

The new board is 3v3 where as your original Arduino was 5v. Are you feeding a 5v signal into the 7-seg display to power it?
Since this display has two LEDs per segment in series we need to power from 5V, even when using 3V logic.

Mike,

It was the 3,5 / 5volt switch on the new Redboard Plus. When set to 5 volts I had the voltage needed to power the LED pushbutton and LCD readout. The program now works.

I had to bypass the 3.5 volt power on the qwiic connector. There are other SDA and SCL pins on the board but I haven't figured how to use them. I would really like to hard wire these in also.

All is well,

Dave
