NeoPixel Power Question - Costume Project

by kagatoamv on Thu Oct 30, 2014 11:24 pm

I've got a costume project I've put together using 110 NeoPixels on five separate data lines, controlled by an Arduino Uno and powered by one of the USB Battery Pack for Raspberry Pi - 10000mAh - 2 x 5V.

110 NeoPixles is to much of a power draw to run off the 5v from the arduino board, so I am considering using one of the USB ports on the battery pack to run power to the board, then the other to run power to the NeoPixles, by connecting it to a usb breakout for the +5v, but I'm not sure how to wire that up, because I know they're supposed to have a common ground.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!
-Nic

Power them separately as you describe from the USB ports. Then, for each of the 5 data lines, also run a ground line from the Arduino to the Neopixel strip.

Thanks again, this worked perfectly.

After figuring out the power issue, I added the RF T4 Receiver so i could switch between light "shows" and the whole thing came together surprisingly well.

I'm always happy to share pictures. Here are a few from Blizzcon 2014, I'm working on a full breakdown about the costume where I will share the code I used.

I also want to shoot a video to show off the animation..
