Hi, I have an interesting project that I would like to do. Make 10x10 led panels with dotstar.
I would make at least 4, because I want to make a battleship game with LEDs.
-I have 2 two different types of controllers I can use, 1) Arduino uno, 2) Parallax propeller activity board.
-I know full brightness is 60ma and for Red,Green or Blue is 20ma max per LED.
-ill probably put in a keypad for input.
-Probably use the LEDs to display instructions, if not ill use a small lcd.
-My main concern for this project:
- is the power (If I only use Green, Blue and Red, a believe a 5v, 10Amp power adapter should do the trick.)
-and cost. (Because of the cost, i was thinking of buying the LEDs in bulk since i need at least 400 LEDs
and possibly making a home made PCB for them)
(I`m still not sure if i should just buy the strips of LEDs or just buy the chip and make a pcb for them)
I pretty much want to place the panels in in this kind of set up with one panel upright for hit and miss, the other one would be for the location of ur ships and status of the ships.
Questions: What does it mean to put the LEDs at full brightness(60ma)? Does that mean the brightest wight?
What do u guys think about the project?

Yes, that's the brightest white. You're not going to be lighting up every pixel, and if you only light up a single color on each, then a 10A supply should be plenty good enoughCree wrote:Questions: What does it mean to put the LEDs at full brightness(60ma)? Does that mean the brightest wight?

Here are a bunch of pictures of my project. Made 4 LED panels 10x10 and 2 keypads were used with shift registers (Parallel to serial). Used the parallax propeller, the game has sound and programmed a fully functional Battleship game on it.
1: Keypad 2: Ethernet cable used for its 8 wires. 3: 74HC165 Parallel to Serial Shift Registers, pull down resistors used.

Your pictures didn't come through. Don't try to link to google. Just upload the pictures directly. Use the choose file button, and then click ADD THE FILE.
Image files should be .png or .jpg, and must be less than 1MB in size.
I think there's a limit of 3 pictures per post, so you'll have to make a couple of posts....

Can you see them now?
4: Dot star LED strips used in rows of 10. 5: Testing keypad inputs and output to the LED panels 6: Completed panels, 2 mounted on each side.

Yeah, Now I see them.
Nifty!
What am I looking at in pictures 1, 2, and 3?
How do you enter the shot coordinates?

I put a better description with the pictures.adafruit_support_rick wrote:Yeah, Now I see them.

Its simple 2 keypads going to 2 shift registers (parallel to serial).
-I had messed up the circuit when soldering the connections, but i was able all the issues with the code I wrote.

cool
Are you planning an enclosure for the dotstar boards? Please post more pictures of those when you can! A video of playing a game would also be cool

I'm not planning on making an enclosure for the boards since they are mounted wood in its current set up. I'll try to get more pictures and make a video this week and finally get around to writing an article that I was going to write for a website.

*I still use the debugger to see the key press input.
