64 Neopixels on 3.3v lipoly?

Post by imrana1 »

Hey guys!

So I have a 8x8 neopixel matrix which I would like to power via lipoly, however I'm worried that the current draw of neomatrix may damage any lipoly battery. Do you guys know an alternative digitally addressable LED which may not take so much current or how I may safely power this neomatrix with only a lipoly battery for several hours?

Thanks guys!

Most RGB LED pixels have similar current requirements (~60mA at full intensity white). You can reduce the current demand by simply running them at a lower intensity.

Worst-case for an 8x8 would be about 3.8A. Typical displays might take about 1/2 to 1/3 of that - say 1.5A.

This battery has a max discharge rate of 4A, so it could drive the array even at max output. With a capacity of 4400mAh, and an average draw of 1.5A, it could power your display for about 3 hours. https://www.adafruit.com/products/354

Just to make sure this matrix can be driven with only 3.7V?

Yes. They are designed for 5v, but we have done dozens of Neopixel projects based on 3.7v LiPo cells & they work just fine at that voltage.

Hi i just ordered this 8x8 neomatrix I have some questions .
If i order this lithium battery pack there is No color changes on the neopixels because I need an Arduino to program it. right?
What kind specific type of Arduino do I need to buy to make the pixels light up change color, letters, messages etc. A small Arduino preferably as long as it does the job.
I want to use this 8x8 neopixel matrix on a jacket so this battery pack is excellent.

For a 3.3v wearable application, I would recommend the Flora. It is an Arduino Leonardo compatible processor in a small low-profile package. https://www.adafruit.com/products/659

Thanks for you quick reply. Before ordering a Flora v2. I want to know:
What kind of cable should I connect the flora to the neopixesl 8x8 matrix ? That will light up all the images colors into the 8x8 matrix.
And where should i connect that cable or solder it into the 8x8 matrix?
And do I still need to order this lithium battery pack for the 8x8 matrix or the flora will power the neopixels 8x8 matrix?
I know i can power the flora with a jest battery holder.

Wiring instructions and general information about neopixels can be found here: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-neo ... e/overview
The best wire to use depends a bit on the design of your project. Silicone coated wire is a good choice for many wearable projects because it is very flexible: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1970
Another possibility is to use 3 of the 4 conductors in this ribbon: https://www.adafruit.com/products/1437

This battery can be used to power both the flora and the neopixels:
