PiTFT 3.5 Plus & rpi3 ?

by jlgangwisch on Sat Mar 19, 2016 4:32 pm

Good day,

Has anybody yet gotten this product working with the Raspberry Pi 3? https://www.adafruit.com/product/2441

I am new to this Pi business, and no way provided has yet worked.

Thank you for any information.

I'm looking forward to this, too. I picked up 2 displays when (IIRC) their description said they were compatible with the Raspberry Pi 3, and am disappointed it's not actually supported yet. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Hello all. If there are any super impatient people like me out there you might be interested in my personal progress with this. I am almost there but I have to issue three commands via ssh on every reboot, and my only about half of the screen has content as shown in this image. http://i.imgur.com/QJeVTMX.jpg

Here are all the steps I have taken that have brought me to this point.

Compile kernel from adafruit/master since the Adafruit helper script bootloader is not compatible with the RP3.

Code: Select all
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
    $ sudo rpi-update
    $ sudo apt-get update
    $ sudo apt-get upgrade

Install Custom Kernel

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
    $ wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/npjc52s2z6ifk55/pitft35r-overlay.dtb?dl=0 -O pitft35r-overlay.dtb
    $ sudo mv pitft35r-overlay.dtb /boot/overlays/
    $ wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/adafruit/Adafruit-PiTFT-Helper/master/adafruit-pitft-helper
    $ chmod +x adafruit-pitft-helper
    $ sudo ./adafruit-pitft-helper -t 35r

Verify no 99-fbturbo.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d

These are the three commands I must issue on each reboot.

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
    $ sudo modprobe bcm2845_smi
    $ sudo modprobe fbtft_device name=pitft rotate=90
    $ sudo startx

Any help getting full screen and automatically starting X to my PiTFT would be greatly appreciated!

-Drew

any news here ?

i got a 3.5 PITFT too and i would really like to get it going on the rpi3

its beeing recognized during bootup when i have a 2.8-resistive configured in config.txt (pitft28-resistive formerly pitft28r)
and i can start it as usual with FRAMEBUFFER=/dev/fb1 startx, But of course the screen is onyl showing a 2.8" dsiplay (as shown by rvajf00)
When i replace pitft28-resistive with pitft35-resistive nothing happens, not even recognized during boot, no device fb1

could you please tell me how to fix this ?
thnx
Helmar

My question concerns about the bluetooth. Is it possible that the kernel for the pitft is not supporting the bluetooth on my raspberry pi 3? I have the following error for the bluetooth:

pi@raspberrypi:~/usb $ bluetoothctl
[bluetooth]# power on
No default controller available

Raspberry Pi configuration
Raspberry Pi 3 w/ Raspbian Jessie Release date: 2016-03-18
Adafruit pitft 3.5", easy install (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pit ... sy-install)
Bluetooth install: https://www.element14.com/community/doc ... berry-pi-3

Hello,

Similar problem: I want to connect a bluetooth device to my raspberry pi.

System:
- Raspberry Pi 3B
- Display: 2441B Adafruit PiTFT Plus 480x320 3.5" TFT + Touchscreen
- Image: Jessie-based PiTFT 3.5 Resistive Image for Pi 1, Pi 2 and Pi 3 (March 25, 2015)
( Image date 'March 25, 2015' cannot be true for Raspi3B on your web page
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pit ... sy-install )

Problem:
If I enter 'sudo bluetoothctl' and 'power on' or 'show' in the console window, I see:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
$ sudo bluetoothctl
[bluetooth] # power on
'No default controller available'

The builtin bluetooth hardware works correct. (I tested this raspi3B with a Watterott 2.8" RPI-Display and image '2016-03-18 Jessie' from web page https://github.com/watterott/RPi-Display)

I have no idea what to do. How can I guide your raspbian to the builtin bluetooth controller.
I hope to see a response in the forum.
Regards KEgg

its probably related to something with the device tree, however I dont know the solution - if anyone knows plz reply and we can tweak the DTO!

Bluetooth controller not found with 'sudo bluetoothctl'. See my previous post.

Hello,
here you see device tree errors ('dtdebug=1' in /boot/config.txt)
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
$ sudo vcdbg log msg
...
001475.728: Loading 'bcm2710-rpi-3-b.dtb' from SD card
...
001541.591: dtparam: uart0_clkrate=48000000
001543.909: dtdebug: Found override uart0_clkrate
001543.953: dtdebug:   override uart0_clkrate: cell target clock-frequency @ offset 0 (size 4)
001552.875: dterror: not a valid FDT - err -9
001552.886: Failed to load HAT overlay
...

The device tree error may be the reason that bluetooth boot fails.
In consol boot log I see
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
Failed to start Configure Bluetooth M... by UART.
See 'systemctl status hciuart.service' for details
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
$ systemctl status hciuart.service
● hciuart.service - Configure Bluetooth Modems connected by UART
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/hciuart.service; enabled)
   Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Do 2016-04-21 10:32:58 CEST; 2min 12s ago
  Process: 387 ExecStart=/usr/bin/hciattach /dev/ttyAMA0 bcm43xx 921600 noflow -                                                                      (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)

I hope this will help you

Hi kegg thanks for posting. Is that the result of Bluetooth controller not found? I can't use Bluetooth after installing pitft 2423 kernel. I get the same errors as others "Bluetooth controller not found.

yes Pi 3 PiTFT does not support BT at this time, we know this, there is no fix yet.
