Fadecandy + RGBW Neopixels

by skelethan on Thu Mar 31, 2016 10:52 pm

Will Fadecandy work with RGBW Neopixels?

I was excited to receive my order in the mail today, but then came across this thread saying that FC only supports 24-bit and RGBW are 32-bit. Did I get ahead of myself in ordering or is there a workable option?

Thanks!

As constructive feedback, it would be helpful if the Fadecandy product page specifically mentioned that it won't work with 32-bit LEDs (since both RGB & RGBW are referred to as Neopixels and the limitation is not mentioned anywhere on the page).

The website definitely makes it sound like ALL NEOPIXELS ARE WS2812.

Sorry for the confusion, but you only mention RGB strips in your original question...

i would like to run about 1.8 meters of individually addressable RGB LED strips, cut into three distinct segments. (so probably need to buy 2m).

The point is the guide/store is misleading, which no one has acknowledged yet. You can only use the fadecandy with SOME Neopixels, and no where does it say this, that I am aware of??? In lieu of that information being correct/present, I look to customer support to lead me away from these kinds of issues, regardless of that fact that if, as a beginner, I mistakenly use the wrong/ambiguous terminology.

ooh, yeah the FadeCandy was designed way before the existance of RGBW pixels. the name and copy have been updated!

the fadecandy itself isnt that smart, its possible that you could use RGBW with some coding - you'd have to adjust the processing code to do the conversion, we'll ask Micah if that's something she can look at!

Nice to see the the support being clarified on the site. =)

Worth noting that a (software / firmware) enhancement to support RGBW has been piloted on the thread below. It's out of my technical skill, but hopefully will get merged into upstream git repo.
