Seeking info on length of addressable LEDs for public art

by RoxburyElectricIlluminationCo on Thu Jun 17, 2021 1:51 pm

I'm one of the lead artists in a project to create a public art light
installation in our neighborhood in Roxbury, MA. The project is to wrap
eight trees in a field out doors in soft-white LED lights during
Deceber–January, with the strip or connected series of strips each
controlled by a different Arduino microcontroller.

To create this installation, our artist collective, in collaboration with a
local non-profit community center and the non-profit Teach 2 Learn, Learn 2
Teach program out of our local vocational high school, will offer a tech &
coding course to local teens, each of whom will end up coding a
microcontroller to control the lights on one of the trees. The total lengths
of the strips we'll need range from 60 feet to 220 feet long.

So, our questions are:
1) what is the maximum length a single
Arduino-controlled addressable LED strip can be?
2) If less than 220
feet, are there solutions to attaining 60–220-foot lengths, each controlled by a single
microcontroller?
3) What soft-white addressable LED strips would work for this project, and what do they cost?

Thanks!
Mark

We have dotstars that are addressable. https://www.adafruit.com/product/2435?length=5 since the dot stars (DS) are repeaters the distance will be regulated by the amount ofmemory and the power that you are able to provide. Take a look at the tutorial https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-dotstar-leds

The Dotstar white strips come with 30, 60 or 144 leds per meter. For long runs like that, you are probably better off with the 30 per meter strips to keep your power requirements manageable. https://www.adafruit.com/?q=dotstar+str ... =BestMatch
