first time with OLED'S

Post by MMARK »

Hi
So I teach high school art and have built small solar powered robots but I want to know if the 2.8 TFT LCD with Touchscreen breakout board w/Micro 3D Socket IL19341 comes with everything Ill need to make it work??? I notice the LED Kits have a list of additional items would I need anything else? The photos show lots of wires etc. Do I have to buy these separate?? I just dont want to have to order and order

Many thanks

The display comes as a breakout board with some header pins. Some of the product photos show it hooked up to a controller board for illustrative purposes, but you will need to supply those items. This photo shows what comes with the product:

Which kits are you referring to here?

Also, OLEDs and LCDs and LEDs are all generally different things. We have displays that are of all three types. May not matter, but just to make sure you know the product you mention is not an OLED display.

Want to make sure we're talking about the same display. Are you referring to this one?

It's not an OLED. So not sure if you're actually after an OLED, or just curious about that display.

In addition to the display, you will need a microcontroller to run your program and drive the display. You will also need some wire for connecting the display to the controller.

Here's a general overview of using the display:

If you want to use the display with a Pi and Python, there is a library for that as well:

You initially mentioned the 2.8 TFT LCD with Touchscreen breakout board w/Micro 3D Socket IL19341. Are you specifically wanting to use that display? Or would another display work? For example, how about combining a Feather:
https://www.adafruit.com/categories/777
with one of the available FeatherWing displays:
https://www.adafruit.com/products/2900
https://www.adafruit.com/products/3315

Asking as this may provide an easier route for you to get started with.

Hi
I don't know the difference but the feather set up looks easier and maybe something a high school student and beginning electronic teacher would understand?? I picked the other screen because it was bigger and for her project would have more impact....

Hi again
so she wants to run 2-3 screens if possible and cheaply on the outside of a boot??? Some of the feather products look like they would allow for several small displays to run.....I really liked the blue tooth but could it run pics??? Sorry to ask so many questions

I think multiple displays will be a little tricky to get working as a first project. It'd be best to start simple and work your way up from there. By starting with one display you'll learn the basic steps needed to get things working.

Yes. But depends on the display.

We have various blue tooth enabled products. Which one are you referring to?

I'd say this is generally true.

The FeatherWing display is just a display. You need to mate it with a Feather mainboard in order to use it. There are numerous Feather boards that have different capabilities like radio, wifi, bluetooth, etc. Since you've mentioned bluetooth, this seems like the one you'd want:
https://www.adafruit.com/products/2995

As an example of how this would work with the display, here is the display without a Feather board attached:

and here it is with a Feather HUZZAH attached:

Just so you know, the HUZZAH has wifi but not bluetooth.

In terms of the header options for the HUZZAH, let me ask this - do you have the ability to solder?
