If you want that would work or you could get another SD card, install the OS on that and try it. That way if it isn't the card you won't have lost any work saved on the original card.

yes, i get a green light - and it flashes and then is a steady light - that is why i think it is the hdmi adapter that came with the kit. as I have tried two other hdmi known good cables and two different monitors....

I have tried to pring up a new pi zero w up with the supplied noobs sd card. It does not power up, replace the card with one that I configured via a download, and the pi powers up no problem. I went to another pi zero w, it also does not boot up, but does on its origninal card.

The Adafruit NOOB cards were purchased before the Zero W was announced and need to be re-downloaded as you found out.

Why is this still true a year later? Why does adafruit still sell an incompatible version of NOOBS with the Zero W bundles and make customers jump through these hoops? As a new October 2018 customer it seems like this should be a well-solved supply chain problem by now.

The pages with the Pi Zero W and an SD card do say: May come blank or pre-burned with NooBs! Since NooBs has recently updated to add Pi Zero W support we recommend reformatting/burning NooBs on from scratch if your Pi Zero doesn't run!
