What is your wishlist?

by smiller2255 on Wed May 23, 2018 10:22 am

Hi there all.

This year, my special needs school district put together an Innovation Fair that invited 14 neighboring school districts to compete in designing something new. The only objectives were that it had to be helpful for someone in their school, and it had to use a Raspberry Pi, MakeyMakey, or TouchBoard that we provided to them.

We had some really awesome projects submitted. For next school year, we’d like to do something similar, but I wanted it to be purely Raspberry Pi-based. Last year, we provided the schools with Raspberry Pi 3s as well as a Raspberry Pi Starter Kit. I was wondering if you could make any recommendations on what I should definitely purchase for this upcoming school year. There’s just an incredible amount of items, and it’s a little intimidating. I'd probably put the budget between $200 and $300 (per team).

I think a Pi camera would open up a wide assortment of options.

Thanks Franklin! I was thinking that too. I'm considering purchasing all of the components necessary to make the Raspberry Pi Selfie Bot, but I'm also wondering if there are any additional boards that should be purchased.

The Sense HAT seems rich in interactive potential.

Related to the Sense HAT, and for a source of motivation for students, check out the AstroPi project:
https://astro-pi.org/
Two Raspberry Pi's with Sense HATs were sent up to the International Space Station. They ran projects that were designed by students.

I recommend that in addition to all the other great stuff, put a Microbit bundle ($16.50 each) into the hands of every student. Lots of easy to use inexpensive programmable devices into the hands of as many students as possible in addition to doing the super cool more sophisticated stuff for the most motivated / advanced students.
