How to make Music Maker Louder

by weibelgl on Tue May 07, 2019 12:24 pm

Hello - I am using Adafruit "Music Maker" MP3 Shield for Arduino w/3W Stereo Amp with 8 ohm speakers.
My students need to have it louder - any suggestions?
Thanks!

Are you using bare speakers, or are they in an enclosure? Without an enclosure or baffle, the sound from the back-side of the speaker will partially cancel out the sound from the front. A simple baffle made from a board with a speaker-sized hole in it will be an improvement over a bare speaker.

Just the bare speaker - will try enclosing.
Let you know what they think.
Thanks!

I have a similar issue, but an enclose will not give enough volume.

Is there a recommended amplifier for music which can increase the volume?

There are 3 primary parts to the equation:
* The speaker(s) (including the enclosure)
* The amplifier
* The source signal

The amplifier will have a power rating in watts. It will also be rated for a certain range of speaker impedance (typically in the 4-ohm to 16 ohm range). To get full rated power to the speakers, select speakers rated for the amplifiers lowest impedance rating and a power rating equal or higher than the amp.

So if the amp is rated for 20 Watts into 4 ohms, you need 4 ohm speakers rated for at least 20 Watts.

But if your source signal is too weak, you may need to add a pre-amp to drive the rest of the system to its full potential.
