Replacements for Ultimate GPS HATs #2324

by ITEC on Wed Jul 24, 2019 9:45 am

We have some Ultimate GPS HATs (item#2324) failing- Not sure of the total number
yet but found around 10 so far. I was told they are spewing garbled data,
blank data and every once in a while a halfway good string (like latitude
but no longitude) Can we received replacements for these?
We ordered 150 on April 12 invoice #2032853-0646667268 and another 100 on April 18 on order # 1742876-5167197534.
Let me know if you need other info.

I'll pass this on to QC. Can you test the rest of the ones you have to determine how many are not working?

this could be bad power supplies or bad connectivity, the modules don't have a high failure rate - do you have the NMEA output?

I am unsure what is meant by bad power supplies. The power is very good and several different power cords were used. The only thing that does not function correctly on the Pi is the hat. There is other code running to do other things with Pi functions and this code operates properly.

Example NMEA output on the string that we are looking at closely. This output is read many, many times and it is always the same on the hats that are malfunctioning:
$GPGGA,,4049.6812,N,,,,,,,,,,,

So, the output is blank except for latitude.

that is super weird. we've never seen half data... one more question, do you have something like a logic analyzer to capture the TX pin data

Yes. It’s super weird. It throws all kinds of fun exceptions in our code (but then that just made it more robust)! I do not have a logic analyzer. I was just outputting serial port data to the console or through Python 3.7.

oh one more Q - which raspi are you using? and do you have an Arduino by chance. im wondering if its a UART buffer issue

We have not had a chance to test all of them yet- could be a couple of months before this would be complete. Do we replace bad units now and if we find more, do another replacement later? And when emailing support just reference this forum? Let me know how we proceed.
Thanks!

its *probably* not the HATs, its something else then. use an Arduino or a logic analyzer to look at the TX data - you're not reading it right, or its not buffering in some way
