Led Matrix for classroom not working

by Lekofraggle on Tue Aug 20, 2019 12:57 am

Hello,
I have a raspberry pi zero and led matrix bonnet. I am trying to set one up for my classroom, but time is running short. I am using one of two matrices (not both), that I purchased from Amazon. Though I did not get them through you all, I am pretty certain they are not both defective. They either display the same lines, or none at all. It changes randomly, but it is always just a bar of color. Sometimes it is localized, but sometimes it is across a portion of the matrix.

With the same cable, both matrices display the same pattern until the pattern switches, then, they both display the new one. The attached image is the most recent. The program running is the sample (D0). However, it does not matter what I run, the image is always the same... until it changes.

The matrices are both 32x64, and I am using a 5 volt 10 amp power supply as well as plugging the pi into the wall separately.

I am using the libraries and following the directions mentioned in the following tutorial https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-rgb-matrix-plus-real-time-clock-hat-for-raspberry-pi/driving-matrices.

I have purchased some new cables (they have not yet arrived), but the only other variable seems to be the bonnet. Could there be a problem with it, or is there something else I am doing wrong?

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Mr. R^2

Okay, so after some other changes, I am still not certain what is going on. I tried using regular female to female jumpers, and it displayed nothing.

Can you post pictures of the displays and your connections for us?

franklin97355,

Thank you for your reply. Here are some images with the jumpers attached (The new ribbon cables are supposed to arrive today). I have also ordered a third screen in the event that the screens are indeed the problem. It should be noted, that I have only tried one at a time not both at once. I also normally do not have the pi hanging like that, but to get the images, I let it do so for a sec. It was difficult to get a good angle, so I took a few images. If you need other views, check out the attached folder.

Edit, The new cables arrived, and did not change anything. Now, none of the lights have lit (all day). I have updated the images with the ribbon cables as they are clearer. The others are still in the folders below.

I really feel out of my depth here. What was supposed to be a quick interesting project has now taken the majority of the last two weeks before school starts.

As an update, I recieved another matrix yesterday, and atill nothing is working. I also switched out the power supply to no avail. Any advice?

Hello again,
Just to keep everyone updated. I grabbed our robotics Raspberry piB, and it seems to be working now. Is the pi zero W not powerful enough to run the library, or is there something else going on with my pi? It seems to be working otherwise.

Thanks,
Mr.R^2
