Vape/Noise Detection

by BonhamMike on Thu Feb 27, 2020 12:57 pm

Hello all. We are wanting to create a STEM project with our High School students, where they build/program a device that will detect the VOC's of a Vape Device, along with detection of Loud Noises. We'd of course like it to be WiFi connected, and the unit send out a TXT message to staff if possible, at the very least an email. Thoughts?

I am new to all this, but that sounds like an amazing idea. I have no suggestions other than I can't wait to see it in action. Post video if you guys get it working! As for the texting alerts to teachers, do you have an app or alert system already in place or are you starting from scratch?

Take a look at this, I think it should be enough to get you started.

Air Quality Sensor Suite

You don't need the custom PCB, a perma-proto hat or bonnet works just as well. It just takes longer to build and test.

Live AIO Dashboard Example

This one keeps track of the environmental conditions at my indoor hydroponics setup. Typically I use them to monitor air quality in our industrial production spaces. They are remarkably sensitive to particulates and VOCs (both common from vaping). The spikes in the graph are when the HVAC cycles.

It should not be difficult to add one of these to detect loud noises. A couple more lines of code will give you email notifications.

Good luck, C
