Velostat as a water level sensor

Post by efeigenbaum »

I am trying to help my students determine water level in a metal water bottle. I was toying with the idea of using a vertical strip of Velostat on the inside of the bottle. Does water exert a measurable level of pressure that would vary by height? I thought I’d ask before I try it out. Alternatively I could put a pressure sensor on the bottom of the cup…thanks for any advice.

I don't think that water pressure in a bottle would be sufficient to make a measurable difference in the conductivity of velostat.

We do have the eTape sensors in various lengths

The problem with submerging a pressure sensor is that most are not submersible. But you could use a ported pressure sensor with a 'dip tube' extending to near the bottom of the vessel. The pressure in the tube would increase with the water level.
