Hi All,
Just getting started as a parent-mentor for a high school science project. Our students want to send up a weather balloon fitted with an assortment of gadgets, including cameras, radio transmitter (HAM), and microcontroller w/sensors. We would like to record data and also send some to the ground via the radio (GPS, temp, altitude, pressure, etc.). We also need to figure out how to extend the battery life for one or two GoPro cameras. The trip will take around seven hours, we estimate.
I obviously have a lot of questions brewing here, so the first thing I would like to request is some links to some similar projects. Any pointers, tips, or referrals to related information would be very helpful.
I will also post this in the General Project help forum.
Thank you,
Bernie

Re: Weather Balloon Electronics Pack
There have been a few high altitude balloon projects posted in the forums. If you search for "balloon" you will get a number of hits. Most have been primarily logging oriented. Having a transmitter on-board should definitely help in tracking and recovery.
There have been a few featured in the blog as well. Some of these have links to web-pages with more technical details. https://blog.adafruit.com/page/2/?s=balloon
To extend the GoPro battery life there are a number of options. We have some ready-made USB battery packs. Or you could make your own using a LiPo cell and a PowerBoost module.

Hi Bill,
I did a search earlier, but I was too specific. Now I see that there HAS been a lot of activity.
Thanks for the pointers.
