Issue with BBB + 4.3" Adafruit DIsplay (not a cape)

by BeagleBoner on Tue May 16, 2017 4:54 am

Hi,
I'm running Debian Jessie 8.7 with 4.4.54-ti Kernel and got some problems to get my 4.3" Adafruit Display running via the parallel port (16 Bit). I've connected the display with the 40pin TFT friend to the ports of my BBB. I've connected the open RGB inputs (LSB) to GND for now. The display shows the linux desktop, but just uses the left side of the display, so its distorted. However touch works fine on the whole screen.
I use the following overlay, input timing values should be ok I think?
https://github.com/beagleboard/bb.org-o ... 1-00A0.dts

Any ideas or hints what could be wrong?

Cheers, Max

Hey,
a little update:

I just tested with a non desktop version of Debian. It uses the whole screen for the command line! So it might be an Issue with the X11 settings?

Hey drew,

yes, this is the display.

Here is the content of /etc/X11/xorg.conf .

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier      "Builtin Default Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier      "Builtin Default fbdev Device 0"
        Driver          "fbdev"
#HWcursor_false        Option          "HWcursor"          "false"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier      "Builtin Default fbdev Screen 0"
Device          "Builtin Default fbdev Device 0"
        Monitor         "Builtin Default Monitor"
        DefaultDepth    16
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier      "Builtin Default Layout"
Screen          "Builtin Default fbdev Screen 0"
EndSection

I will upload a picture of the running display later this day.

I now have the display and adapter that you have and will attempt to replicate the issue.

Hi,
thanks for your efforts drew! Never expected you to actually pick up the hardware and try to rebuild my settings. Wow!
But it looks like I got it running now and you can keep your breadboard in the drawer. ;)

It is a problem with X11 settings. I'm not really sure why it is running now and it seems that xorg settings are still a bit confusing to me. I set default screen depth to 24 bit now but it is acutaly running with 16 bit. In display subsection I set the depth to 16 bit with weight 5/6/5.
"fbset -i" says
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
mode "480x272"
    geometry 480 272 480 272 32
    timings 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
    accel true
    rgba 8/16,8/8,8/0,0/0
endmode

Frame buffer device information:
    Name        :
    Address     : 0x9c880000
    Size        : 522240
    Type        : PACKED PIXELS
    Visual      : TRUECOLOR
    XPanStep    : 1
    YPanStep    : 1
    YWrapStep   : 0
    LineLength  : 1920
    Accelerator : No

I dont understand why it says 0 timings and 24bit rgba settings when it is just connected with 16bit and shows the desktop fine now.
I will post my updated xorg.conf and logfiles later.

Thanks

Max

I asked Robert Nelson who creates the Debian images.
He advised to delete DefaultDepth option from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

He also noted this blue-and-red-wiring = "straight"; property in:
https://github.com/beagleboard/bb.org-o ... A0.dts#L95

It looks like some displays have BGR instead of RGB:
/* If you want to get 24 bit RGB and 16 BGR mode instead of
* current 16 bit RGB and 24 BGR modes, set the propety
* below to "crossed" and uncomment the video-ports -property
* in tda19988 node.
*/
