Connecting To BeagleBone Black (First Time)

by TheFlyingCouch on Sat Jul 23, 2016 2:14 pm

I seem to be unable to connect to my BBB at all. I tried connecting a mouse, keyboard, and monitor, and I had the following results on booting up:
black screen, just a handful of blinking pixels at the bottom of the monitor
saw penguin in top left corner, then screen returned to black, mouse moved
black screen, no mouse movement

I've tried connecting over the internet, but my router uses 10.0.0.###, and so I can't connect to 192.168.7.2. I did not buy a serial connector, though I can order one and see if I can at least console into the device.

I do find it very useful to have the FTDI serial cable for situations like that.

Without being able to see the boot up messages, I'd suggest trying one of the latest Debian images:
http://beagleboard.org/latest-images

I would recommend trying Debian 8 (Jessie) first:
Debian 8.4 2016-05-13 4GB SD LXQT image

If that doesn't work, then try the Debian 7 (Wheezy):
Debian 7.11 2015-06-15 4GB SD LXDE

If you have Ethernet connected to the BeagleBone, then I would expect it to grab an IP address via DHCP if has booted OK.
