Geany on BBB over ssh or VNC

by RobFM57 on Sun Feb 26, 2017 2:18 pm

Is there any reliable way to run Geany on a Beaglebone Black over SSH or with a VNC viewer? I can connect easily with Putty to open a SSH terminal, but Geany will not run. I am thinking Geany is a graphics program and SSH cannot support it. The error message from Geany is "cannot access display." I know there is an -x option, but I do not understand how to use with Putty.

I also tried accessing the Beaglebone using tightVNC as described in TopTech Boy YouTube lessons, but with mixed results. Sometimes it opens the desktop fine and then I can open Geany, but the vnc is unreliable. Usually the desktop opens as just a blank grey screen. In that case I have to kill the tightVNCserver and start over. If I keep trying, it might eventually work.

I am obviously a beginner, so any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm guessing since you mentioned putty that your host computer runs Windows?

X11 Forwarding ("ssh -X") will work with putty but you need an X server running. Here is an option:

Xming is another option:
