WiFi Problems

Post by MikeRH »

I followed the tutorial to install and configure a wifi dongle on the BBB. I'm using a UWN200 wifi adapter. I booted up the BBB to add some new features to my project and I noticed that my wifi was no longer working. I've tried rerunning through the steps but I can't seem to get anywhere.
I always get the message: ifup: interface ra0 already configured.

I will then try ifdown and ifup again but I get the message:
DHCPDISCOVER on ra0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 17
DHCPDISCOVER on ra0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 3
No DHCPOFFERS received.
No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.

I'm concerned there might be something wrong with the drivers since I don't see running when I run ifconfig:
ra0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0c:43:00:02:c6
inet6 addr: fe80::20c:43ff:fe00:2c6/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:38175 errors:0 dropped:2 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:2359 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:8592839 (8.1 MiB) TX bytes:260337 (254.2 KiB)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

What was the URL of the tutorial that you followed?

It is possible that the driver isn't loaded.

Please passte the output of:
lsusb

and the output of:
dmesg

Thank you for the quick reply. I forgot to add that the wifi was working up until recently and I didn't make any changes. It just seemed to stop working. Tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/setting-up-w ... bone-black Here is the requested output.

I searched for UWN200. Is this it?
http://www.logicsupply.com/uwn200/

It looks like LogicSupply does have a tutorial:
http://www.logicsupply.com/explore/io-h ... -tutorial/

Direct link to Google Docs:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-CI ... v29ly6yl74

Thank you Drew, I'm not sure why I didn't see that. I'll give that tutorial a shot.

Unfortunately I ran through their tutorial and it did not go well. While the tutorial steps went well, my Beaglebone will not even recognize the device now. For some reason ra0 will not show up in ifconfig and I'm a bit lost as to why. Could my usb drive be damaged, if so is there a way to check this? I've e-mailed logicsupply to see if they have any advice but I may need to start fresh. Right now I have a project I've been constructing in the cloud9 ide. Would it be safe to reflash the device and reload all of my project files?

It could be a hardware problem if you don't see it in "lsusb" output. You may want to post one the official BeagleBoard.org mailing list to see if anyone else has encountered this issue:

Make sure you back up your project before reflashing the card. I believe they should be in /var/lib/cloud9

Thank you, the device shows up in lsusb but I can't seem to get an interface in ifconfig or iwconfig. I have everything backed up in a repository so I'll probably reflash and see if I still have the same problems.

Looks like I have the same problem. I'm using a wifi dongle from here. Same tutorial.

The dongle:

Here's the ifdown/ifup output:

Re: WiFi Problems

I can't seem to find my Ourlink wifi stick [PID 1012]. When I receive the new one, I'll attempt to reproduce.

However, from the tutorial:
Out of the box the 3.8 kernel seems to have problems with popular WiFi adapters, like the Realtek-based adapters in the Adafruit store. In particular you might experience problems like the WiFi adapter randomly not connecting to a wireless network on boot. I'll show later in the guide that a simple script to reset the wireless adapter on boot greatly improves reliability of Realtek and other adapters on the BeagleBone Black.
Please try the instructions under:
WiFi Reset Service
The next step is to install a small script that will reset the WiFi interface by bringing it down and back up again automatically on boot. With the latest 3.8 kernel I found this reset script was necessary to get reliable performance with Realtek and some Atheros WiFi adapters, so don't skip installing it! Later kernels or more stable adapters might not require the reset service, but it can't hurt to install it for them too.

I did that. Reran the script just to be sure. Same results.
