POE Splitter's Ethernet not working

by TomOlson on Wed Nov 07, 2018 10:10 am

Hi, I bought 14 of these "PoE Splitter with MicroUSB Plug - Isolated 12W - 5V 2.4 Amp" - PartNo. 3785 on Sunday. They power up my Raspberry Pi, but my network boot fails because there is no Ethernet connection through the splitter. We are using a Cisco Catalyst 2960-S POE+ switch which supports 802.3at, the update to the 802.3af standard.
If I power from an adapter and plug the Ethernet directly in from the switch to the Pi, it boots fine. So, something not working in the POE splitter's Ethernet. I tried 3 of the 14 with the same behavior, the yellow light on the splitters Ethernet port lights steady, but that's it. I see there are references to other Adafruit POE splitters having issues with Ethernet.
What next? Thanks, Tom

As a sanity check, could you test all of them please? It won't have any effect on the return/replacement status, and will tell us whether the issue applies to specific units or all of them.

worth checking - what if you connect them to a non-PoE hub e.g. if you get ethernet thru? we tested them with a basic 100mbps ethernet switch

All 14 are DOA. Ethernet does not work on a non-POE switch.

Yeah, I agree, it's unusual and disappointing. I do have the packaging. They are all in their little plastic bags.

Ok, so what's next? I've lost a few days on my project and have no plan. Am I returning these for a refund or replacements?
If replacements, can we check that they work before shipment? If this item is suspect, any other suggestions? Thanks.

I bought another POE splitter on Amazon from a company called Uctronics over the weekend. I tried it this morning and the Pi booted fine. I don't think it's the switch. We're running a Cisco Catalyst 2960-S POE+. I also went back and grabbed 3 from your batch, as a sanity check, and the Pi would not boot (gets power, no Ethernet).

I'm not sure where you want to go with this.
1) I can return the 14 and get a refund.
2) I can return the 14, and you can ship me another 14. If you do that can you include and separate the 5 you checked as working? I'll check those first. Or, check another 9 and send me 14 that are checked as working.

Frankly, I'm frustrated. Not with Adafruit, but all I want is something that works so I can get my Pi's working ASAP. You're the 3rd vendor I tried where I had to return hardware, because it did not work. I didn't expect this to be a big issue. I went to you guys because of my experience and your reputation as a company. Even you guys now checking your existing stock is an example of why I shopped with you. Anyway, enough of my rant.
What's next?

the 5 we tested went back in stock. since you're the only person with an issue we really don't think replacing them will make any difference - it just doesn't work with your setup. you can return them all for a refund

email support@adafruit.com to let em know, and a link to this thread.

thx!
