DC Motor Compatibility

by GickyR on Sat Oct 17, 2020 6:38 pm

I am a big fan of Adafruit and enjoy making projects with your boards and motors.

I am working on a Halloween project that uses a 50W 12V DC motor. See Product Info Sheet for motor attached.

I would like to use my Raspberry Pi 3 and Adafruit Stepper/DC Hat to control the motor. Is this motor compatible with the Stepper/DC Hat?

Can you give me any pointers for the Python code and the IOs to use for the high/low speeds and park functions for this motor?

Thank you!

The motor is not a good match for the HAT. The no-load current rating at high speed is 1.5A which is above the 1.2A continuous current rating for the HAT. The no-load rating at low speed is 1.0A. But I'm assuming that you intend the motor to actually move something, which immediately removes it from the 'no load' case.

What would you like to do with the motor? There are other options for operating higher-power motors like that from a Pi.

Thanks for your reply.

The motor is part of a kit that I bought.

Are the any other Adafruit boards or hats that would allow me to control this motor with the Raspberry Pi?

The DRV8871 would be a good match for that motor: https://www.adafruit.com/product/3190

Thanks, I have now purchased and assembled the DRV8871 Board. It is a slick little board!

Question: the sample code that you have in the documentation is C/C++ written for an Arduino.

Do you have the same code in Python for the Raspberry Pi?

We don't have a Python example for that specific board. But PWM output via CircuitPython is described here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/circuitpytho ... on-outputs

You would output a PWM signal to IN1 to turn in one direction. And to IN2 to turn in the other direction.
