Stepper Motor HAT - Power Issue

Post by cschron »

I have the Stepper Motor HAT for Raspberry Pi and am having power supply issues.

Everything works great when I power the controller with my bench top power supply. However when I try to power the controller with an external wall power supply (12V 5A). Strange things happen the green power light will just flash. The stepper motor when it works just pulses. I have tried 3 different power supplies and same thing happens with all of them. When I use bench power supply and works great.

Thoughts?

Thanks!!

The motor specs are incomplete, but from what is there it looks like that motor is not compatible with the HAT.
Rated current 2A & resistance 1.1ohms
Based on that, it appears to be designed for use with a current limiting 'chopper' type of driver. With a 1.1 ohm phase resistance, it will be trying to pull 10.9A per phase (21.8A total!) through the HAT - which is only rated for 1.2A per phase.

www.pololu.com carries a wide range of stepper drivers with current limiting.
