Pimoroni Unicorn Hat HD: Popped Capacitor?

by RussSoquid on Fri Dec 08, 2017 3:09 am

Brand-ass new to Raspberry Pi. 7/10 hardware knowledge. I just threw my Unicorn Hat HD on a Pi Zero W to see what I could make it and when I plugged in the power, the hat threw out a spark and I'm pretty sure a capacitor popped (see attached photo.) The Pi is fine, but obviously I don't want this to happen again with another $36 LED array. Like, I imagine either having the orientation backwards on the gpio header, or accidentally offsetting the pins could have unwanted consequences, but I made sure to avoid both of these things.

So I have a few questions, Hopefully someone can fill me in.

What did I do wrong?
Could this have been a faulty component?
Is removing the popped cap and replacing with a functional one worth the effort?

Apparently the photo didn't come through. Could you post that again please?

The forum places a limit on file sizes, but 800x600 images usually work.
