[SOLVED] RPi 3B+ no longer boots

by uintahlib on Mon Jul 30, 2018 11:29 am

To Whom It May Concern:

The Raspberry Pi 3B+ which I purchased from adafruit (order ID 1772275-9096695739) used to boot up just fine, but after I shut it down and unplugged it one time, and then plugged it in, only the red power LED lights up. No green ACT LED lights, nothing on the monitor, mouse LED does not light, the SOC does not get warm, etc. I replaced the SD card with another SD card containing a known-working Raspian image and the same behavior was exhibited. I powered up the RPi 3B+ with a known-working power supply and it is still not working (I also powered a known-working RPi 3B with the suspect power supply and it booted up without issue). I unplugged everything (including the HDMI) from the RPi 3B+ and then powered it up, but the same behavior was exhibited. I tried the SD card in a known-working RPi 3B and it boots up just fine without any issues. This makes me think that it is a hardware problem. I thought that maybe it was a blown polyfuse; however the red power LED lights up and I feel no heat from the RPi 3B+.

Another fact which might be useful for you to know is that I initially had this RPi 3B+ running a VGA monitor via a HDMI-to-VGA adapter. Eventually, the the video failed to display (the RPi 3B+ booted up fine) and the only way to get video back was to connect the RPi 3B+ to a DVI monitor via a HDMI-to-DVI adapter.

I am anxious to test the the voltage of the 3 Volt and 5 volt GPIOs; however, I do not know where those GPIOs are, nor do I know how to do the voltage tests. Will you please instruct me on which GPIO pins I should probe and also how I run the diagnostic tests?

Thank you

This tutorial shows how to use a multimeter:

https://learn.adafruit.com/multimeters/overview

This website has diagrams that show the pins on a RasPi's GPIOP header:

adafruit_support_mike,

Thanks for posting those link. I have discovered that the 5V GPIO pins read 5.39V and the 3.3V pins read 6.1mV. I hope that this information satisfies your request- please notify me if you need additional information.

Okay, it sounds like the hardware is good.

What version of Raspbian did you use on the SD card? The RasPi line has gone through enough hardware updates that "boots another RasPi" no longer has much diagnostic value. The Pi3B+ contains hardware no other RasPi uses, so only the most recent versions of the OS will work.

adafruit_support_mike,

Thank you for your reply. I had Raspbian Stretch from 2018-06-27 (kernel v. 4.14) working just fine on the RPi for a while before it died. I re-downloaded and checked the hash sum of the same version, then reflashed the image to the uSD card and tried it on the RPi3B+ again, but no luck.

I hope that I read the multimeter correctly :-$ It was basically my first time using one and I was borrowing it.

Thanks.

That version is known to work on the Pi3B+, thank you.

Send a note containing a link to this page and your order number to support@adafruit.com. The folks there will get you a replacement Pi3B+ and arrange return shipping for the one you have now.
