Received a defective Pi B+

by gcliff on Sat Jan 12, 2019 4:56 pm

Order #1941606-5705345093
I ordered a Pi B+ and right out of the box it smelled like burnt electronics. You know the smell.
The green and red LEDs come on but it never boots.
I hooked it up with the same HDMI cable and monitor and power supply as my other working Pi B+ that is exactly like it and even used the same SD card but the unit I received from Adafruit never boots up or displays anything.

I'd like a replacement unit and a shipping label to return the defective one please.

Thanks.
Greg

That's extremely unusual..

As a sanity check, could you measure the voltages on the 3.3V and 5V GPIO pins please?

Measured the 3V3 and 5V GPIO pins with a Fluke 12 multimeter and observed 5.20V and 3.293V on the unit in question.
Using the same power supply on my other working Pi B+ the observed voltages were 5.18V and 3.332V.

Thank you.. that rules out one known failure mode.

Does the dead Pi3B+ generate a rainbow screen on the HDMI display when power is connected?

Thank you. The rainbow screen is generated by the onboard firmware, so that rules out any configuration issues.

Send a note containing a link to this page and your order number to support@adafruit.com and the folks there will get you a replacement Pi3B+.

My Raspberry Pi was the original B+ not the Pi 3 B+.
Please authorize sending a replacement for the one I ordered and received under order number 1941606-5705345093.
Thanks.

The diagnostics are the same for both boards, so the authorization works for a Pi B+ as well. Let the folks on the business support team know you have pid 1914 and they can confirm it on your original order.
