How to make my Adafruit Stepper Bonnet stackable?

Post by nerb »

Would like to use a stacking header with my Adafruit stepper bonnet but it looks like I’d have to somehow remove the existing header that came preassembled. I assume stacking header pins won’t be able to go through the holes here. Do you know how I could do this? Here’s a picture of the stepper.

I'm not sure why the header holes looks like they have solder in them. You'd have to remove the header on the other side, which according to the product photos looks to be a surface mount header. Hmm.. the best bet would be (IMO) to remove the plastic housing on the header and remove the pin sockets one at a time. The holes would then have to be cleaned out, using a solder sucker https://www.adafruit.com/product/148 and/or solder wick (desoldering braid) https://www.adafruit.com/product/149. Then you can put a stackable header in place. On boards beyond the first you need to solder the address configuration jumper pads as required. See https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-dc- ... -1097209-3. That guide uses the full-size hat version of the board, but functionally/electronically it's the same.

Thanks Dave.

Curious why the header holes have solder in them. Doesn’t match any of the product photos. Oh well.

Another option that does not involve removing the existing header would be to solder a male header strip to the breakout holes that run parallel to the header. Then for the second board you could use either plain female headers, or stacking headers if you need to add more boards beyond that.

The only pins required for operation are GND, 3.3v, SDA and SCL. But you would probably want headers down the full length for stability.
