Stepper Motor Hat and Pimoroni pHAT Stack

Post by authentic »

Hi,

I'm working on a project that calls for 4 stepper motor hats (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2348). Due to space constraints, we'd prefer not to stack the stepper motor hats on top of the PI and each other.

To keep it slimmer, we are looking at the Pimoroni pHAT which seems like a great fit for our application. (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3742)

I have concerns about spacing though - are the 4 sets of 2x20 pins far enough apart that I can use this with 4 stepper motor hats? In the pictures, they look too close together to support 4 stepper motor hats.

If the pHAT stack wont work, what options to I have to get 4 stepper motors to be flat instead of stacked? I was looking at the stacking headers, 2x20 ribbon cable, and box headers, but cannot seem to locate a combination of parts that would facilitate this layout easily. Open to suggestions.

It looks like a full size hat takes up the space of two headers. So you could fit 2 hats and have space for a bonnet left over. E,g, https://cdn-shop.adafruit.com/970x728/3742-04.jpg

The DC/Stepper board is also available as a bonnet which you let you fit enough on the pHAT Stack. https://www.adafruit.com/product/4280

Looking at the schematic it seems like all you need is power, ground,SDA, and SLA. The board is driven via I2C so wiring them directly should work. That would let you arrange them as needed.

Awesome. I was using the hats I had on hand so didn’t think to check for smaller solutions. Looks like that would do the trick!

Thanks for the quick reply!!!

The only difference I see is that the hat has some EEPROM while the bonnet doesn't. The tutorial guide is shared by both products, so other than that they are interchangable.
