Motor hat question

Post by amartin88 »

Hello and thank you in advance for your help.

I am looking at the follow product
https://www.adafruit.com/product/4280

I am planning on running 2 motors that easily fits within the motor specs and on high powered LED at 5v 1 A.

I am looking to confirm get advice if this driver board would work as I believe it would for this LED…. And to see if it can be powered directly from the 5v on the pi?

I am very very space limited and using an external power supply for the my not be an option.

Thanks,

Andrew

Yes, you can use the motor HAT to drive a LED. Just make sure that you have an appropriate current limiting resistor to avoid burning out the LED.

The Pi will supply 3.3v via the header to power the chips on the board. Motor power needs to be supplied via the screw terminals on the board.

While it is possible to run a jumper from one of the 5v breakout pins, in general it is not a great configuration. Motors tend to be very electrically noisy loads. In addition to voltage fluctuations due to current demand, they will dump a lot of brush noise onto the power and ground lines. This is sometimes enough to cause processors to malfunction. For this reason we recommend separate supplies.

To mitigate interference in a single-supply configuration, you can add a large capacitor between 5v and GND on the board to smooth out the current demand. And you can add small ceramic caps to the motor to help suppress the brush noise. https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-mot ... aq-2861890
