Using a Pi and Crickit as a switch

Post by sammosummo1 »

I have a Raspberry Pi and the Adafruit Crickit the Pi. I would like to turn on/off two DC motors programmatically from the Pi. This is easy enough to do by connecting said motors to the Crickit, but the Crickit can't supply enough current, the motors need more ~20A stall each. So I have another circuit with a battery, MOSFET, and the motors, and a switch (actually two loose wires that should be connected to a switch). Now I would simply like to complete the circuit and turn on the motors from the Pi. This is a dumb question, but what is the best way to do that? I considered connecting the loose wires to a relay and connecting the relay to one of the Crickit's Darlington drivers, but that sounds wrong to me, because relays are usually connected to power.
