USB to TTL Serial Cable

Post by stats »

Is there a document to detail which pins to connect to use
this cable?

Cheers,
Rich

Hi Rich,

Cable pin-out is as follows:
Red = +5V
Black = gnd
White = RX
Green = TX

To connect to Raspberry Pi:
Red to pin 2 (+5V)
Black to pin 6 (GND)
White to pin 8 (GPIO14, TXD)
Green to pin 10 (GPIO15, RXD)

This will power the RPi from the USB port of the computer you're using to communicate with the RPi. If The RPi is getting power thru its micro USB power connector, leave the red wire unconnected.

The product page (http://www.adafruit.com/products/954) says "this cable is ideal for powering and connecting up to the debug/login console on the Raspberry Pi".

Just checking.. does that mean you can do the initial setup and subsequent control of a Rasberry Pi using this cable without needing a USB keyboard and mouse, and HDMI or composite television/monitor? If so, that would be very cool.

I think the answer is yes, but is this a special cable? What is the chip inside the header? I'd like to see if I can re-create the same function. I cut a standard usb cable laying around and made the necessary connections, but was unable to bring up a console.

Yes. There is a usb/serial converter chip built into the header. There is a data sheet link on the product description page.

hello,
I have purchased the usb to ttl serial cable and it works fine from my mac to rasbperry pi..
I can't make it go from my raspberry pi to another raspberry pi. I have it on a powered hub
but the raspberry pi does not seen to see it.. any suggestions? Also I take it that no drivers
are required for this .. but they are for mac and windows.
Thanks,
-don

we dont have any details on using the USB cable ON the pi itself - it needs drivers that may not exist! its only for use from a computer to the pi
