White Screen on Adafruit PiTFT - 2.8" on Raspberry Pi

by amit_ary on Fri Aug 28, 2015 9:07 am

Hello
I bought pitft -assembled 320x240 2 8 tft+touchscreen for raspberry pi and followed the tutorial for "Easy Install" @ "https://learn.adafruit.com/downloads/pdf/adafruit-pitft-28-inch-resistive-touchscreen-display-raspberry-pi.pdf"
However, after reboot the screen is white. No matter HDMI is connected or not (but the moment HDMI is connected I have display on it but not on tft screen).

For details attaching the output of dmsg. Please help.

Are you sure you're using the easy install image? I don't see the PiTFT drivers loading. Also, I see something else taking over the SPI bus:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
[    3.019207] spi spi0.0: setting up native-CS0 as GPIO 8
[    3.028132] spi spi0.1: setting up native-CS1 as GPIO 7

I'm running into the same problem when using the assembled capacitive touchscreen after following the easy install instructions. I'm not using the easy install image, but the most recent raspbian image (2015-05-05). Maybe that image is incompatible with the kernel that gets installed following the tutorials?

Just checked, when using the linked image in the tutorial (2015-02-16-raspbian-pitft28c_150312.zip), the screen works. So I guess there is actually an incompatibility with the newer raspbian image, can somebody confirm?

I'm not aware of any incompatibilities. Are you sure the drivers are installed and loading? Check dmesg

No, I think that's exactly the problem. For some reason, the described method of installing the kernel and drivers doesn't work.

What I'm doing is
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
curl -SLs https://apt.adafruit.com/add | sudo bash
sudo apt-get install raspberrypi-bootloader
sudo apt-get install adafruit-pitft-helper
sudo adafruit-pitft-helper -t 28c

as described in https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-2-8-pitft-capacitive-touch/easy-install. However, when rebooting, the screen would just be white. A device /dev/input/touchscreen (as I understand should exist thereafter?) is not created. That's why I'm suspecting the customised kernel is not compatible (without having a more specific idea as to why exactly).

Hmmm, wish I'd read this an hour ago.

Just done the install, after making sure everything was fully up to date, ie
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

As others I only get a white screen. Now what am I supposed to do with a wet bank holiday afternoon? :-)

Rick,

Thanks, but i was aware of this so I did the update/upgrade to get everything up to date before I installed the PiTFT stuff, not after, so that isn't my problem :-(

Keith, are you also using the latest official raspbian image 2015-05-05?

Rick, let's assume the setup has been done as described in https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-2-8-pitft-capacitive-touch/easy-install. Could you imagine any reasons why this wouldn't work in the 2015-05-05 image of raspbian? What is the difference between the 2015-05-05 raspbian image and the "adafruit" image that is linked on the mentioned page? I know, it is supposed to work with newer images(?), however, it doesn't :/

Have you tried the detailed install procedure?

I just yesterday noticed that I could no longer set up a PiTFT from scratch using the easy install method. This is on a Raspberry Pi B 2. I tried the latest and previous version of Raspbian, and two different PiTFT screens (PiTFT 28r and PiTFT Plus 28r). White screen no matter what I did.

After some troubleshooting it appears that /dev/fb1 never even appears. I noticed that raspberrypi-bootloader was updated on 8/20. I installed the previous version from 5/28 with
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
sudo apt-get install raspberrypi-bootloader=1.20150528-1
and it worked the way I was used to.

Is something wrong with the new version?

EDIT: As an update, I accidentally upgraded bootloader when trying to compile fbcp. Here's where I eventually ended up:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
sudo apt-get install -y libraspberrypi0=1.20150528-1 libraspberrypi-dev=1.20150528-1 raspberrypi-bootloader=1.20150528-1
sudo apt-mark hold libraspberrypi0 libraspberrypi-dev raspberrypi-bootloader
That should pin those libraries to prevent auto-update for now.

Yes, I guess so, as I said I did the update/upgrade yesterday immediately before using the easy install guide for the PiTFT

I noticed that raspberrypi-bootloader was updated on 8/20.

Interesting, there was a lot of activity during the sudo apt-get upgrade related to removal of diversions of boot overlays.
Also when I did sudo apt-get install raspberrypi-bootloader nothing much happened. I was presuming that this was a good thing, but maybe it wasn't.

Please post the output of sudo dmesg

Attached...

Thanks for all the comments

hiya, the pi team just did a huge kernel upgrade, please do not do a pi update/upgrade, it will remove the kernel. use our ready-to-go image for now :)
