Firewalker lightup shoe not working?

by Mathpun on Fri Mar 13, 2020 3:34 pm

hello I am trying to make this project: https://learn.adafruit.com/firewalker-l ... s/overview -- how do I make this one for just one shoe? So just one Flora/LED strip etc -- I don't need 2 shoes - so does the code need to be altered anywhere?

I am using the LED strip that has alligator clips at the end, and using alligator clips to hook up to the conductive fabric

however nothing is happening :(

I changed the code to make sure it knows there are only 30 LEDS here:
#define N_LEDS 30 // TOTAL number of LEDs in strip
#define SHOE_LEN_LEDS 30 // Number of LEDs down ONE SIDE of shoe

I only have one "shoe" that I want to work -- are there any other places in the code I need to change if I just want one project to work - so one Flora/LED strip? Thanks!

Looks like you have just one strand of conductive thread on one side of the velostat and both alligator clips attached to the same strand.

You need to have one strand on one side of the velostat and another on the other side. Don't allow the two strands to come in contact with each other. Attach one clip to one strand and the other clip to the other strand. https://learn.adafruit.com/firewalker-l ... ep-sensors

Then run the test sketch to test your sensor.

Thanks for that, super helpful! So I fixed that and when I run the test code and check my serial output it looks like its working and when I test it it shows the numbers for sensor and when I touch it says LEDs triggered -- however the LEDs do not light up -- and I know the strip works because I just tested it on a different project - -any ideas?

If you open the serial monitor in the Arduino IDE, it should show you the actual sensor values. You may need to adjust the code to match the response of your sensor.

Sorry I think I misunderstood your last comment - but it does say LED triggered on the serial monitor but the lights don’t light up - does that make sense ?

OK. If it says LEDs triggered, then your sensor is working.

Make sure that you are connecting to the input side of the LED strip. The arrows on the strip should point away from the end with the connections.

I am using the LED strip with alligator clips on its end (from adafruit) so there really is only one way for them to plug in - any other thoughts? Seems like that might not be it? Thanks so much for ally your help !

Please verify that the arrows on the strip are pointing away from the end with the connections.

Here is a picture -- since I am using the ones with the alligator clips it seems like there is only way to plug it in -- here you can see the arrows are pointing away from the arduino -- lmk what you think, thanks!!!

The red alligator clip is the +5v connection and should be clipped to VBatt.
The white one is the DIN connection and should go to pin 6.

Hopefully, the reversed connections have not damaged the strip.

Sorry that photo is using the CPX --- isn't it different for the Flora?

Either way: Red needs to connect to VBatt because that is the power supply. The white wire is your signal wire. That connects to a digital pin.
