El Panel, Can it Be Heat Pressed?

by Alexbngclothing on Tue Mar 17, 2020 3:43 pm

I'm looking to put a vinyl design over an El Panel. I have successfully applied vinyl on a panel via heat gun and it's able to stay attached. However, the heat gun and lack on flat pressure ridges the vinyl. I was wondering if anyone knows if heat pressing vinyl onto the el panel is possible or if there's some damage to be had from the process? Also how would you go about attaching it to a garment? Can you only sew along the clear film?

Heat probably isn't a good idea. Check out the approaches taken in this guide:

which includes cutting and attaching a custom EL panel.

I actually tried heat pressing the same 10cm x 10cm EL panel and it works fine. Can you go into detail of what might occur with heat pressing the EL Panel? What can be damaged from having it undergo heat?

EL panels have two separate layers that shouldn't be shorted together. The concern with heating would be that you could compromise the internal layer that is keeping the separation. And also just general deformation since it is made of plastic. But, as you've found out, it can probably handle some mild heating.

If that in-between layer was compromised, would I know right away? Or does it take time to find out? Because I heated it using 300 degrees with medium pressure.

Yep, you'd know right away. It would stop working.

300 F or C?

Fahrenheit. But I heat pressed it in parts, probably a total of 1 minute 30 seconds.
