Trinket - Neopixel 60 ring wall clock

by Rutava on Wed Dec 06, 2017 4:40 pm

Hello,

I am making Neopixel 60 ring wall clock using trinket.
But, when i try to upload the code it shows me error - avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x1781/0xc9f)
Arduino: 1.8.5 (Windows 10), Board: "Adafruit Trinket 8MHz"

Sketch uses 4964 bytes (93%) of program storage space. Maximum is 5310 bytes.
Global variables use 95 bytes of dynamic memory.
avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x1781/0xc9f)
avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x1781/0xc9f)

This report would have more information with
"Show verbose output during compilation"
option enabled in File -> Preferences.

Can someone please suggest me how to solve this error?

Thank you

I am having same issue -- Adafruit Trinket - Mini -- have installed all the Adafruit Board options to the IDE (1.8.5)
and the Windows Drivers following instructions in the Adafruit "Trinket - Mini" introduction videos.
Consider me to be an "interested party" in any replies....

Is the LED blinking when the upload starts? The Trinket bootloader will run for a few seconds and then time-out. If the compile takes too long, it may time-out before the upload starts and give you the error you are seeing.

One way around that is to press the reset button at about the time the compile finishes and the upload begins to re-start the bootloader. It may take a few tries to get the timing right.

Will give it a try. I found that the red LED blinks a couple of seconds when power/usb cable is first inserted. I will try the “reset” option. Thanks for your quick response!!

When you press the reset button, do you see any device show up in Device Manager?

No. There ard 10 usb deviced listed.
When I click on reset the list closes
then reopens and there are still only 10
devices - same 10, nothing new.

Try a different cable and/or USB port. USB 3.0 ports in particular tend to have problems with the Trinkets. USB 2.0 ports generally work better. Or, if you have a USB 2.0 hub, sometimes putting that between the Trinket and a 3.0 port will work.

I have no 3.0 ports. I have tried to upload to the mini on both a laptop and desktop PC
and with different cables. Both fail with the same error. If I plug a genuine Arduino
into my USB hub it gives me two PORT options.... COM3 and COM4. When I plug in the
mini and update the "board" in the IDE, it only gives me COM4 as an option which fails
with message it can't find a USB port. I purchased a Trinket 16Mhz PRO and tried to
download to it and it responds that COM4 is not available... there are no other devices
on my system using COM4... ??? I have previously be able upload to the Trinket PRO
but for some reason it no longer loads???

A Pro Trinket does not emulate a COM port on its own. If you want to upload via a COM port like an Arduino, you need to use an FTDI USB/Serial cable: https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing- ... using-ftdi

If you are uploading via a regular USB cable, you do not use COM ports. The Pro Trinket emulates a USBTiny device, so you need to have the USBTiny driver installed
https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing- ... dows-setup
And follow the uploading instructions here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing- ... bootloader

Oops! I checked the device I use the Neo-Pixel string on and it is a NANO, NOT a Trinket Pro.... sorry for the mistake. So, I should use the FDTI interface to load the Mini and Pro. I’ll go toy around with that intetface. I haven’t used it so it will a learning event for me. Appreciate your help..!!

OK, got my "act" straight now... config is ADAFRUIT TRINKET PRO coupled to an OSEPP FDTI board.
The ADRUINO IDE config is BOARD = "Pro Trinket 5V/16Mhz(USB)",
PROGRAMMER = :USBtinyISP"
Power the Trinket w/FDTI board land the RED LED on the TRINKET
flashes with two rapid flashes is succession. It does not pulse on and off as I have
observed in the past. Fails with "Could not find USBtiny device"
Tried using BOARD="Pro Trinket 5V/16MHZ (FTDI)"
Fails with "can't open device "\\.\COM4": Access is denied."
There is NO device on COM4 except the FDTI board.

Not familiar with the OSEPP board, but if you are using an FTDI/FT-232 interface, you would be programming via the USB/COM port emulated by the FTDI device.

Please post a photo showing how you have everything connected.

Attached... some observations when attaching to the FTDI interface:
When I attach the standalone Trinket to the USB hub the RED LED does a
slow pulse as described in the Adafruit doc. When I plug the FTDI module
onto the Trinket, the RED LED does two quick flashes every second.
Normal/expected behavior? Also, when using the FTDI module
what Programmer should I set the ARDUINO IDE to use??
It is currently set to USBtinyISP
