New Neo Trinkey Dead?

by pauladaacct2 on Fri Jun 18, 2021 9:31 am

Hi. I just received a new Neo Trinkey (P/N 4870) and it seems to be completely dead. I'm very familiar with these types of devices, Arduino, etc. I've tried plugging it into multiple USB ports on multiple computers with both Windows and MacOS, and the USB device is never detected. Plugging it into a USB battery pack doesn't do anything either, no lights, nothing. Double-clicking the reset to enter UF2 mode does not appear to do anything. There is no activity on the NeoPixels at all and the USB device is not detected. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Just to check - did you try wiggling the Trinkey around in the USB connector? The exposed bare-edge design can sometimes be tricky to get good connection. You should see something on the NeoPixels with just power though.

Yes, tried wiggling it, putting it in different connectors and wiggling it, wiggling it some more and then after all that, I continued to wiggle it. It is a good suggestion you're making because it fits loosely in a USB socket (and can be put in upside down), but this thing is dead, no lights, nothing happens when I press the button once, twice, etc.

My trinkey no Blinky! How do I get a replacement?

Thanks in advance.

OK, thanks for trying. Yah, let's just replace it. Send an email to support@adafruit.com with a link to this thread and your order number and they can send you a replacement Neo Trinkey.

Thank you for sending the replacement so quickly, but the new one seems to be dead as well. I have an Electrical Engineering degree and have worked on complex electronics for decades, but this silly Trinkey has me stumped! Again I've tried more than one USB supply, of varying wattages from iPhone charger to dedicated USB power brick, to Mac laptop, to Windows laptop. I've attached a multimeter to the output of these supplies to make sure they are putting out 5+ volts (5.1 v). I've wiggled and jiggled the Trinkey to make sure it is making contact with the USB supply pins, pulling it out a little, pushing it in a little.

There are no lights that light up on either of the units you've sent me even after waiting 1+ minutes for it to start up. I've pressed the button once to reset, twice to get into boot loader mode, etc. dozens of times and again, absolutely nothing.

If you care enough to find out if you have a bad batch or a "trinkey impaired" customer, I'll send them back to you AND I'll pay for postage. I just would like to get to the bottom of this issue, it's really nagging at my engineering curiosity.

Ready? And I tried all of these on the first Trinkey as well so something is very weird here. Maybe somebody can test one before sending?

ok it is quite unusual - please email support@adafruit and ask for a tested-good neotrinkey and RMA FORPHIL label (if you are in the USA)

I have a dud as well. No lights.

I was instructed by support@adafruit to ask here about the defective part. I've tried it on multiple devices. Also all the other parts of my orders worked in those USB ports.

Can you help
Thanks
Jim

Same here, dead neotrinkey. PiHut are refusing to deal with me and told me to come here.

Seems like you've got a defective batch of these.

I just received my THIRD replacement trinkey AND IT WORKS! YEAH!

So it seems like maybe you did have a bad batch...

Thanks for sticking with me on this Phil! If you find out what was bad about the other two I sent back, please let me know. Again, as an engineer, I'm super curious.
