Adafruit Pro Trinket Windows 10 Not Recognized

by dhall85 on Sat Jul 14, 2018 1:37 am

Hi,

I recently purchased the Pro Trinket 5v 16Mhz board and tried to run some sketches on my laptop. I am using a Windows 10 machine with IDE ver. 1.8.5
When I plug my Trinket in any of the USB ports I get an error message " Windows does not recognize this device or this device has malfunctioned" I've followed all of the past tutorials to upload the drivers for usbtiny back when i bought the Gemma 2. I can connect with the Gemma 2 but the Trinket will not. I only get the green power light no red light at all and no choice of serial port in IDE. In device Manager I tried to update the driver manually but Windows says I have the most up to date driver. Not sure what else I can do. The USB cord I used to connect the Trinket is the same one I used to connect the Gemma. I even tried to use a USB hub with 2.0 ports. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Does the Pro Trinket's red LED pulse when you click the reset button?

No, the red LED never comes on at all.

I attached a screen shot of my device manager and the error I get when the Trinket is attached.

The Pro Trinket doesn't have any real USB hardware. Its bootloader emulates a low-speed USB connection long enough to upload firmware, but that's it. The Device Manager won't have any useful information except during the 10-12 seconds the bootloader is doing an upload.

If the red LED doesn't pulse when you click the reset button, you probably have the board connected to a USB-3 port. Those emit signals the bootloader can't handle, so the code crashes and restarts over and over again.

Try putting a cheap/old USB-2 hub between the computer and the Pro Trinket. The hub will have its own USB host chip, and that will block the signals that cause problems for the bootloader.

I've tried using a USB 2.0 HUB with no luck. Isn't that the same with the Gemma? I am able to use the Gemma.

I hope this was the correct place to post questions. I purchased the Trinket through Amazon. It said it was was sold by "Adafruit" and has all the correct Adafruit identification on the board.

We don't sell anything on Amazon, but some of our legitimate resellers do. There are also people who use our name without permission though, and they pop up about as fast as our lawyers can file reports about them.

We had another thread with a similar issue, and the problem there turned out to be older Pro Trinket drivers that were installed before the machine was upgraded to Win10. Those were getting in the way and keeping the bootloader from making a good connection. You might want to check for that.

Thank Mike. I've returned the Trinket to Amazon. Maybe I'll try again from Adafruit directly.
