No serial USB port for mac in Arduino IDE

by jwbacn on Sat Jun 29, 2019 10:55 pm

I have an Arduino Trinket 5v I am trying to connect to my computer via USB. When I click Tools>Port there are no USB options listed. It shows multiple /dev/cu.XXXX options which are bluetooth related.

I have tried on my 2016 Macbook Pro Mojave with no luck, and have looked on StackExchange and have tried installing CH 34X drivers to no avail. I have also tried on a 2013 Macbook Air Mojave and it doesn't work.

I have downloaded the trinket libraries and have selected the board as 'Pro Tinket 5V/16MHz (FTDI)' although I don't think this is related to the port. I have tried multiple cables and am using one that *does connect* to an Adafruit Pyportal.

The tutorial I was following says no drivers required on the mac. Thanks for your help!

The Pro Trinket doesn't register as a Serial Port in the Arduino IDE.

The board doesn't have any real USB hardware, the bootloader just emulates a low-speed USB connection long enough to upload firmware. The details are explained in the tutorial:

Hey Mike thanks for your reply. I'm still confused. Can I use the microUSB at all? Or do I need to purchase something else like this?

https://www.adafruit.com/product/954

The tutorial didn't list that as a necessary part.

Also I'm using Arduino 1.8.9 - is the bug referenced in your link squashed in this newer version?

There's nothing referenced in the tutorial about this (https://learn.adafruit.com/bike-wheel-p ... y/overview).

You can program the Pro Trinket through the micro-USB jack without using an external USB-to-Serial converter. You just have to reset the board manually to force the bootloader to launch and start emulating a USB connection when the IDE is ready to upload the firmware.

It's all covered on the tutorial page linked above.
