Is my NeoPixel broken?

by BijanA on Thu Apr 23, 2020 7:40 pm

I got a Trinket M0 and NeoPixel 16 LED.

I use Mu to create some test code to have APA102_SCK range through all colors and to turn D13 on.

I have soldered GND, USB, D0 (from Trinket M0) to Ground, 5V DC, Input (on NeoPixel). I have tested that the NeoPixel is receiving 5V by using multimeter on the other GND, 5V pins.

When I run the sample NeoPixel code, nothing happens. I have changed the pin to D0-D4 (and changed the code to these pins respectively) and nothing happens.

Is there anyway I can test if my NeoPixel is working?

Try powering the NeoPixels with 3v (from the 3v pin on the trinket). What's likely happening is that the data signal is a 3.3v logic signal which is generally too low to work properly with 5v powered NeoPixels. 16 NeoPixels may be fibne with 3.3v. If not, they'll need 5v and you'll have to use a level shifter on the data signal. See https://learn.adafruit.com/neopixel-levelshifter for more about the problem and solution.

I tried it with 3V and I am not seeing any life in my NeoPixel. Could it be I messed it up soldering?

That's always a possibility. Post a clear photo of your soldering if you can.
