Power supply for Trinket M0 and Neopixel

by Bromley47 on Fri Nov 20, 2020 3:36 pm

I am hoping to use a Trinket M0 - for use with CircuitPython & Arduino IDE with a 16 LED NeoPixel ring - what sort of power supply should I use for the board?
And can I connect from the board USB to the Neopixel? Would this give me 3v or 5v to the Neopixel?

Good info on powering in the uberguide:

Thanks for posting the link. For the m0, I couldn't tell what the specs were for a power supply - when connected to my laptop's USB port, running 'lsusb -vv' tells me that it supports a maximum of 100mA - which I suppose answers my next question: why my laptop has no problem powering the trinket M0 plus a 16 neopixel ring, but my pocket USB charger crashes it instantly - it's rated at a maximum of 1A, but I just assumed it would only supply the amount of power requested by a device. Since that is not the case, can you give me a recommendation? Because I don't want to carry around my laptop just so i can run the trinket :)

I just bought this in the hope that it will be a solution: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1944

It works! After plugging in the powerboost 500, the trinket m0 was still crashing, and I was about to pull my hair out. All I wanted to do was to get the demo program running. Taking a cue from this Q&A - viewtopic.php?f=52&t=170308 - I commented out the import of anything related to keyboard and keycode, and now it works.

Being a complete n00b, this is a great example of the sort of stuff that can trip me up. I had no idea that importing those libs would crash the device if there's no keyboard or other HID device detected.

And here's the final product - I can quibble with some of the finer aspects of the PETG print as well as the soldering, but it looks pretty nice.
