Just tried your new beta signed windows 8.1 64 bit driver for my rather old USBtiny and it worked fine.
Thanks for your continued support

Re: BETA TEST: Windows 8 Signed Trinket/Gemma/USBTiny Driver
I'm having trouble installing the driver. When I try to run the installer_x64.exe I get the message, "This application cannot be run from the command line. Please use your initial installer application if you want to install the driver." I'm running Windows 8.1 x64.

I suggest you plug in your device, wait for the "driver was not found", then go into Control Panel, right click the device, click Update Driver, point to the UNZIPPED directory of files.

Re: BETA TEST: Windows 8 Signed Trinket/Gemma/USBTiny Driver
Hmm...it seems that my computer isn't even seeing the trinket at all; no message about a plugged in device, no unrecognized device in the device manager, no active serial ports in the Arduino IDE... What should I do?thekitty wrote:I suggest you plug in your device, wait for the "driver was not found", then go into Control Panel, right click the device, click Update Driver, point to the UNZIPPED directory of files.

You would appear to have a power only USB cable. You need one with good signal wires.

Ok, that's weird...it was a (seemingly) normal Amazon USB cable...anyway, I used a different cable and everything is great now, the computer recognizes the trinket and the new drivers are installed, but...the IDE still doesn't see anything in a serial port (the serial port option under the tools menu is grayed out).thekitty wrote:You would appear to have a power only USB cable. That is normal, the USB connection is not a serial port per say. The Trinket may be programmed by selecting Trinket as board type, USBtinyISP as programmer. Press the reset button and upload your program while the red light blinks.

Try uninstalling the driver, then re-install the signed driver.

Rick, do you think the beta status should be lifted? I think folks are having enough success to recommend this to PT. Thoughts?

I agree. I'll mention it to him.

I've been struggling with this over the weekend, and probably wouldn't have bought a Gemma if I knew how many hoops you need to jump through to do something simple. I've read as many posts as I can find, and had at least a little success with the signed drivers. However, I am still stuck:
Arduino IDE 1.05 r2
Win 8.1
Latest error:
Binary sketch size: 832 bytes (of a 5,310 byte maximum)
avrdude: error: usbtiny_transmit: usb_control_msg: sending control message failed, win error: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
this check.
avrdude: error: usbtiny_transmit: usb_control_msg: sending control message failed, win error: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
Device is recognized, see image.

Try a different USB cable and a different USB port. You might also try connecting through a self-powered USB hub.
Are you pressing the reset button on the Gemma just before the upload begins?

Re: BETA TEST: Windows 8 Signed Trinket/Gemma/USBTiny Driver
I tried 3 cables and two hubs (one powered, one not). On the third cable with the powered hub, I got something like this:
avrdude: error: usbtiny_receive: usb_control_msg: sending control message failed, win error: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
(expected 4, got -5)
I saw elsewhere that this (expected 4, got -5) error can be ignored.
Chirp sketch seems to work.... and I changed it to Meow, though the sketch doesn't load on first try.
So it seems to be working now... after like 4 hours. So I have to ask... will there ever be an easier way to do this? Given the procedure with the "good" cable is still wonky, I can not see where the cable really made a difference. All seems like smoke and mirrors right now :-)

Re: BETA TEST: Windows 8 Signed Trinket/Gemma/USBTiny Driver
Sometimes the change in chip delay time mentioned in the tutorial gets rid of 4,-5 errors. It is often best to get a known good cable at the start to avoid getting a wonky cable from the "mystery bin of cables" we all have.
