Bluefruit LE SPI Friend during macOS pre-boot process

by john21030 on Tue Mar 13, 2018 12:55 pm

My question concerns the following setup:
Bluefruit LE SPI Friend (product ID 2633)
Bluefruit firmware version 0.7.7 (latest)
MacBook Pro 15-inch (2017)
macOS Sierra version 10.12.6
Arduino IDE version 1.8.5
Adafruit BluefruitLE nRF51 library version 1.9.5

I'm using the Bluefruit LE SPI Friend's HID capability to emulate a keyboard for macOS. Everything works great except that the emulated keyboard cannot be used to type the FileVault (full disk encryption) password during the macOS pre-boot process. It appears that the Bluetooth connection between Bluefruit and macOS is established later in the boot process, after the password is typed (judging by Bluefruit's blue status LED).

I have a regular (non LE) Bluetooth keyboard that works fine for typing the FileVault password.

Is there something about the Bluefruit that prevents it from being discovered during the macOS pre-boot process? Or, is there something about the configuration that I'm overlooking? My code follows the HID keyboard example in the Bluefruit library.

Either way, thank you for your innovative products and providing the software to support them.
