What is bluefruit firmware ?

by nelhensley on Fri Jun 14, 2019 8:38 am

Hi,
I am confused. When a product like the new feather nrf52840 says it uses bluefruit. Is bluefruit firmware part of the bootloader? Is it a compleat Bluetooth le protocol rewrite by adafruit? In your learning doc Kevin Townsend shows the memory map and bootloader for nrf52 is at the top of the diagram and the Nordic softdevice s140 is at the bottom

Is bluefruit firmware part of the bootloader section? If no the where is bluefruit firmware loaded?

When you include bluefruit library in the ide is it using bluefruit or s140 or both?

Hi! The Feather nRF52840 has had the regular nRF bootloader replaced with our UF2 bootloader for ease of loading non-signed things, and the Nordic SoftDevice is also flashed on to the chip. The Bluefruit library is an Arduino library that calls the Nordic SoftDevice. We also use the SoftDevice for CIrcuitPython's BLE API.

danhalbert is spot on, the bluefruit feather nrf52840 comes with only bootloader + SD. The bluefruit firmware is mostly refer to Arduino BSP core + library here
https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_nRF52_Arduino

which can help you getting started quickly with BLE and other often used service such as bleuart, hid, midi etc ...
It is not the same as binary blobs in nrf51 family, the whole bluefruit firmware on nRF52 series is fully open source ( in above link).
