ARDUINO WIFI 101 SHIELD RETIRED? AND WHAT NOW?

ARDUINO WIFI 101 SHIELD RETIRED?

I see in https://store.arduino.cc/arduino-wifi-101-shield this board tagged as "RETIRED". And for Adafruit it's OUT OF STOCK. Comments?

That board and the two Adafruit ATWINC1500 WiFi Breakout boards contain the ATWINC1500 module. How far has that module come in its life span? And how far the two boards? (I mean the one with PCB antenna and the one with antenna connector).

Are the ATWINC1500 still considered a good candidate for new designs?

If not, alternatives?

I see that you have DISCONTINUED the Adafruit HUZZAH CC3000 WiFi Shield with Onboard Antenna. So the TI CC3000 is not considered a candidate for new designs? Some of the TI documents referred to have been removed, but there are also ACTIVE TI documents for the CC3000.

At the moment I am working (and blogging) with an XMOS WiFi sliceCARD that contains a CC3000 and I am new to embedded WiFi. So I have more questions than answers!

Some response there to a similar question.

Thanks. I actually saw it before I posted, but I had those further questions. It does say RETIRED at the arduino site.. And the future of these modules..

the atwinc modules do not have any EOL info, so we dont know anything. however, they seem to be readily available so we have no plans to discontinue our boards!

the cc3000 modules were essentially discontinued by TI many years ago, with slow but steady 'refusal to fix bugs or respond to support requests' so we discontinued them. the atwinc work much better and cost less, anyhow :)

This is interesting info! Thanks.

I guess I should enter the Adafruit-atwinc (not Arduino..) era before I even finish the TI modules.

It would be fun to connect your modules to the xCORE-200 eXplorerKIT and the XC language.
