Bluefruit connects to UART but then disconnects when sending

I'm using the Bluefruit LE SPI Friend with an Arduino Pro Mini. When trying to run the example sketch "bleuart_cmdmode", I am able to see the device and connect to it on the Bluefruit App on my phone. But as soon as I try to send or receive any data over UART it just disconnects. Does anyone know what might be causing this, or how to go about troubleshooting it?
