Ultimate GPS Not Receiving Location Data

by kingofgames010 on Tue Oct 27, 2020 10:43 am

Hey all, this question is regarding the Ultimate GPS Breakout.

I've been trying to get my GPS to work for a couple weeks now with limited success. Whenever I run the sample code given by Adafruit, I get details such as the date and time just fine, but I never receive information on latitude and longitude. I have attempted leaving the system outside for up to half an hour, and during that time I never got those details. I do not have an external antenna attached to it at the moment, but I've purchased one that I hope to use. Is that really all I'm missing? I feel like its strange that I cannot get this information on a day with clear skies and half an hour using the internal antenna. The system I'm looking to incorporate the GPS into needs to be able to operate in heavy rain and weather, so I'm very nervous about the chance of success I have. My wiring is identical to the Adafruit tutorial for Ardunio, and I've attached a picture (please ignore the extra component in the picture, its not part of the current sketch.)

It may be related to the unsoldered headers on the GPS breakout. Try soldering those on so you can stage the breakout on your breadboard and see if that helps.

Hey hey. Since last time I've got ahold of the external antenna and adapter from Adafruit and connected it to my ultimate gps.

I've done the soldering and my wiring is as here:
Image

The output I get from the serial is this:

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
$PGTOP,11,3*6F
$GPGGA,000037.799,,,,,0,00,,,M,,M,,*7B
$GPRMC,000037.799,V,,,,,0.00,0.00,060180,,,N*41

Still getting zero satellite fixes.

The soldering on the LSM breakout will need some work. See the soldering guide linked above.

The GPS module soldering looks better, but also check all pins there for potential issue (again reference guide linked above).

For now, remove the LSM breakout from the setup. Wire up just the GPS module. Post another photo showing this setup. Be sure to clearly show how the wires are connected to the Uno.

When you re-wire the GPS module, use the guide:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-ult ... ino-wiring
Power goes to VIN, not 3.3V.

Hello.

I've removed the LSM and now only have the GPS connected to the Arduino, which I have changed the pins on appropriately. I'm getting the same outputs. The LED fix light is blinking once every ten seconds after a few seconds of rapid blinking, but the serial output is showing no fixes on any satellites.

Power from 5V on the Arduino side. Please make sure you are following the guide:

Tested with 5v, same results. No satellites and no fixes, but still getting Date and Time.

Purchased a replacement GPS just in case it was my module that wasnt working, but I'm getting the same issue. Clearly its something I'm doing wrong because I'm using outside on a sunny day with no overhead obstructions and I'm getting nothing.

It may still be related to the soldering job on the headers pins. Recheck all those and make sure they look OK:

How long are you currently waiting to see if you can receive a fix?
